TreeFrog Secures €30 Million for Regenerative Medicine Trials

TreeFrog Therapeutics, a Bordeaux-based biotechnology company, has secured €30 million in financing from the European Investment Bank (EIB). This funding will be used to initiate human clinical trials for the treatment of Parkinson's disease. The financing is structured as quasi-equity, a hybrid mechanism that provides financial flexibility without immediate capital dilution.

Founded in 2018, TreeFrog aims to scale up cell therapy production. Using induced pluripotent stem cells, the company produces brain microtissues that can restore motor functions by secreting dopamine.

The EIB financing is part of a new model designed to meet the specific needs of biotech companies. It is structured in three equal installments of €10 million each. The first two installments have been disbursed, while the third is contingent upon interim trial results. TreeFrog plans to submit a clinical trial application by 2026.

This funding round strengthens TreeFrog's position, adding to its strategic partnerships, such as the 2023 global license agreement with Vertex Pharmaceuticals for its C-Stem technology in type 1 diabetes. The company, employing 165 people, is also preparing for additional fundraising and seeking industrial partners.
